Barking is the older town of the borough, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the town centre and the station, and the remains of Barking Abbey close to the high street. East of it lies the Becontree estate, built by the London County Council between the wars and running on into Dagenham: two-storey brick houses in short terraces, with front and back gardens, many of them bought by their tenants and some since extended. Down by the Thames, Barking Riverside is a large new neighbourhood of flats and houses with its own Overground station.
Becontree houses are compact, so the projects are about using the plot: a single-storey rear extension to enlarge the kitchen, a loft conversion where the roof allows, and new kitchens and bathrooms. The Victorian terraces near the town centre take the usual side-return extensions and dormer lofts. In new-build homes the layout is set, so floors, fitted storage, doors and decoration are where the work is.
