Croydon is London’s southern edge and one of its most varied boroughs to build in. The north of the borough, around Thornton Heath, Selhurst, South Norwood and Norbury, is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces on long, narrow plots. To the south the land rises towards the North Downs, and Shirley, Sanderstead, Selsdon, Purley and Coulsdon are largely interwar and later semis and detached houses on bigger, often sloping plots. In the middle, around East and West Croydon, there are newer flats and towers, many of them converted offices.
Each of those homes asks for different work. A terrace gains space in the side return and the roof, so most of the bigger projects there are side-return extensions and dormer lofts, with a new kitchen to finish. An interwar semi has room to the side and rear: hip-to-gable loft conversions and single-storey rear extensions are the usual route, and a sloping garden often needs a raised deck to give a level terrace by the back door. In a flat the layout is fixed, so the work is inside: flooring, a kitchen, doors and decoration.
