Wimbledon is really two places. Down the hill, around Wimbledon Broadway, South Wimbledon and Wimbledon Park, the streets are Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Up the hill, Wimbledon Village and the roads around the Common have larger detached and semi-detached period houses. To the west, Raynes Park and West Wimbledon in SW20 are mostly semis built between the wars.
The terraces follow the usual London pattern: space is found in the side return and the roof, so side-return extensions and dormer lofts are the main projects, with a new kitchen opening onto the garden. The larger houses up the hill tend to need finer work: kitchens and bathrooms fitted to older, less square walls, wood floors laid over old joists, staircases and joinery repaired or matched. Many of those streets are in conservation areas, where the outside of the house is protected, so most of the change happens inside. The semis in SW20 have the room of a hipped roof and long gardens, which suit hip-to-gable lofts, rear extensions and a garden room or office at the end of the garden.
