Questions about Flooring

Asked before most jobs like this. Anything else: call or message us.

Typically one to three days for one to three rooms. Herringbone and parquet take longer, because every block is set out and fixed individually, and a levelled subfloor needs drying time before the floor goes down. Your programme is confirmed after survey.

Engineered boards have a real wood top layer bonded to a stable core, so they move less with changes in temperature and humidity; many are suitable over underfloor heating, but check the manufacturer's guidance. Solid wood is timber all the way through and can be sanded back more times over its life, but it moves more and needs a suitable subfloor. We'll talk through the options for your rooms at the survey.

Every floor product has a flatness tolerance set by its manufacturer, and pattern floors are the least forgiving. We check the subfloor for level and signs of damp at the survey; if it is out of tolerance, it is levelled before anything is laid. The estimate calculator lets you allow for levelling, and we confirm on site whether it is needed.

There are two ways to cover the expansion gap at the walls. Taking the skirting off and refitting it, or fitting new skirting, over the new floor gives the cleanest edge; scotia fixed along the existing skirting is quicker and leaves the walls undisturbed. We'll agree which suits your rooms before we start.

A new floor is often higher than the old one, so doors may need trimming at the bottom. We take them off, cut them to clear the new floor and rehang them, and fit threshold strips where the floor meets a different surface or height in the next room.
